Ear Training & Sight Singing
Sight Singing:
by Michale Carabine
An essential part of improving ones musicianship is ear training. This task can be split into two categories; external ear training- listening to music and trying to make sense of what’s happening, and internal ear training- looking at a piece and trying to ‘hear’ it in you minds ear. The second of these is a real challenge but fear not, it can be approached in a simple manner. Try writing out some basic intervals (thirds, fifths, octaves) and then sing them. Really honing your ability to hear music without the aid of you instrument will greatly improve your ability to improvise, and increase your appreciation of music overall. Good luck!
