Guitar Lessons – Guitar Tips
I’d like to shed some light this week on the lesser known side of guitarist John McLaughlin. Most known for his ferocious electric work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 1970′s, McLaughlin also blazed new paths for the acoustic guitar during his stint with the group Shakti. His work on such albums as A Handful of Beauty (1976) and Natural Elements (1977) is simply astounding. Part of his sound can be attributed to a scalloped (fretless) custom made Gibson acoustic, with the addition of seven ‘sympathetic’ strings for greater sonority. There is hardly the space here to describe the level of musicianship achieved on these recordings, so do yourself a favour and check them out.
