Violin Tip on Double Stops

Double Stops:
by Moira Burke

What is a Double Stop? A Double Stop is when you play two notes simultaneously with the bow while depressing two separate strings by the fingers. Two separate notes will sound at the same time! Learning to play Double Stops on the violin or viola can be quite challenging, but there are many tricks that may be able to help you! Firstly, make sure that your fingers are placed properly for intonation. Check each note separately before playing them together, and use your open strings as a reference point if needed. Now place your fingers down so that they are not touching any other strings (except for the wanted ones). At the beginning, it may feel like a big stretch to place 2 fingers down at the same time. It may help if you consciously bring your left elbow completely under your instrument. The further you bring your elbow the more room and flexibility you will have with your fingers. Lastly, make sure that you place your bow equally on both strings so that both notes sound at the same time and are both equal in volume to the listening ear! Good Luck!
