Guitar Tip: Treble

Treble

By Neil whitford

The “Treble” knob on most guitar amps refers to the higher range of sound frequencies being produced by the amplifier. Depending on the amplifier, this control will have different ranges, but is actually one of the most important controls you have. High frequencies have the tendency to cut through other sounds and therefore can sometimes equate to volume. Unfortunately, too much high end means the sound is harsh or brittle, so a fine balance is important. The tone control on your guitar has a similar effect on the sound. Balancing your treble will allow the other controls (bass and mids) to fall into place more naturally, and allow you to cut through a loud band when necessary. Spend a lot of time getting to know the effect of treble on your different guitars through experimentation.
