Learning Guitar Solos
Learning Guitar Solos Note-For-Note
by Todd Lefever
In addition to practicing scales and arpeggios a great way to develop your chops is to learn to play the guitar solo from a recording note-for-note. In my next few postings I am going to discuss some of the guitar solos I’ve learned to play over the years that have helped me become a better player.
Angus Young – You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC)
For rock players, learning to pay Angus Young’s guitar solo from “You Shook Me All Night Long” is a great lesson in how to use bends, vibrato, double stops, slides, pinch harmonics and position shifts. It is also very melodic and has great rhythmic phrasing.
This solo is an example of how to play in the appropriate style for the song. A fast, overly technical solo would sound of out of place here. Angus’s tasteful, bluesy solo fits the song perfectly. Since it is not fast or technical, it also makes a great solo for beginners to learn. I highly recommend this one for anyone who wants to learn the basics of rock lead guitar.
