Voice Tip: Healthy Singing
by vocalist Mandy Ebel
” Vocal Damage is unfortunately not one of the most “brought up” topics in the music industry. A lot of people don’t even realize that they have a vocal condition, but seem to notice that they lose their voice easily, and even every word spoken can be a major effort, when it’s supposed to be a breeze. To find out if you have a Vocal Condition, see a ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist Doctor). Vocal damage can occur, NOT ONLY TO IMPROPER SINGING TECHNIQUES, but also due to the following things: caffeine (pop, coffee), alcohol, cleaning agents, SMOKE AND SMOKING, genetics, allergies, dust and hay fever, speaking with harsh vowels and consonants, yelling over a loud environment, improper breath support- even when speaking, Tensed throat, face, jaw and tongue-when speaking OR singing, not consuming not enough water (luke warm or hot is best) and fluids. There are a variety of methods to aid in solving some of these problems, including Voice Speaking Therapy, Proper Singing Techniques, Surgery- in certain conditions (with MUCH INVESTIGATION, AS IT IS VERY RISKY AND CAN BE DETRIMENTAL), and avoidance of the previous listed causes.
