You are What You Listen To…

by Julia Bentley

“You Are What You…Listen To?”
Here’s a little listening exercise/musical equation to help prove that

“you are what you eat” is just as applicable when it comes to music

making!
Start with some gypsy jazz…
Django Reinhardt

+
add in some electronica/techno…
Vitaliic – “Poney Part 1″

+
don’t forget your “scattin’, and jivin’”…
Cab Calloway – “Minnie the Moocher”

+
or the sweet production…
Daft Punk – “One More Time”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBpPda8wsjE
+
take lessons from a famous voice…(if this is your first time hearing

this lovely lady, definitely browse the youtube selections. You’ll be

missing out if you don’t!)
Billie Holiday – “The Blues Are Brewin’”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWtUzdI5hlE&feature=related
…put it all together and you have…
=
CARAVAN PALACE! – “electro swing/gypsy django party”
Caravan Palace – “Suzy”

Caravan Palace – “Jolie Coquine”

Now that you’ve heard the end result, take another listen to the

equation and try to figure out something from each song that carries

over to Caravan Palace’s music! Is it instrumentation? Tempo? Rhythms?

Production? Vocal stylings?
Even though some of the songs are as different as night and day, they

all come together to make some amazingly catchy songs (I dare you not

to dance). The best part is, the sound is unique!
Lesson learned…never limit your listening!
