Performance Anxiety

Vocal Tips No Comments

As many of you may know, last Sunday we had a mini recital at Bad Dog Theatre for the students of Julia, Ben and myself. A lot of great talent was heard that day and a good time was had by all. As terrifying as it can be to be onstage it is a wonderful learning experience and brings home all the things we talk about in class. Something I tell my students all the time is that mistakes happen and it’s more important to just keep going. You can’t stop to fix mistakes and you can’t start over when you’re in the middle of a song. Music is very linear in that it’s always moving forward, it never stops or goes backwards. I saw this multiple times with the people onstage where they would make a mistake or they looked as though they weren’t sure what came next but everyone persevered and kept going with their song. It is a hard thing to go onstage and harder still to mess up onstage so congratulations to everyone who performed and I hope to see even more people at the next recital!
