Home Studio Recording & Demo Production

Most musicians dream of one day recording their own music. Recordings are crafted to be the definitive versions of a musician’s compositions. He can arrange and layer instruments in ways that cannot be replicated live. This is the beauty of the studio. A composer’s imagination and inspiration will not be limited by the physical constraints of a live performance venue. Self-recording is common among musicians in every genre. The production courses at Toronto’s Elite Music Academy teach them how to make professional-sounding recordings at home.
The Basics: Home Recording & Demo Production
This course lasts for eight weeks. Students meet for one hour sessions every week. They start out by learning about the equipment and which sounds can be created or augmented by the tools available to them. Within a few weeks, they will be in the studio and working like real pros. They will start with the basics, like learning how to arrange microphones to achieve the desired quality of sound. They will then learn about the process of mixing, which is almost the opposite of the public perception of production. After layering all of the instrumental and vocal tracks together, the mixer steps in to adjust the sound levels in every layer and, if necessary, remove some of the tracks. People who possess both the imagination of a producer and the tasteful restraint of a mixer will flourish in this class and can look forward to lucrative careers in the music world. The final meeting is a two-hour recording and production session with a local Toronto singer-songwriter. The students will be facing real stakes because the artist will be expecting a legitimately commercial recording by the end of the two hours. This is a good class for a musician who wants to fill in the gaps in his existing skill set or someone who has never been in a recording studio before. Learning about recording and production helps songwriters figure out how to write with an ear toward crafting good records.

Advanced Course: Home Recording & Demo Production
The course is geared toward people who found their niches in the beginner course and want to continue experimenting with sound. The Advanced Course is split in two eight-week sessions and is also comprised of one-hour meetings a week. In the first half of the course, you will also get a two-week workshop that focuses on audio design and scores for film and television. The skills learned in The Advanced Course will help musicians learn how to record varying styles of music. This is incredibly useful, since many self-taught producers only become adept at recording and producing their own music. Advanced students will continue to hone their mixing skills and will be trained in different topics such as recording drums, fixing vocal tracks, layering percussion arrangements, and so on. The final session for the higher-level seminars is a four hour recording session for a guest band.
The course is split in 2 parts:

NEW! The Professional Workshops: Home Recording & Demo Production
These workshops are intended for the people that are almost ready to immerse into the professional world and want to get some more hands-on experience on producing songs. It consists in four two-hour sessions, scheduled every other week. In this workshop the participant will work with the instructor against the clock to produce a song from scratch with a specific sound-alike goal in mind. Every sound that is needed will be recorded from scratch (drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, special effects, percussion, etc). The participant is also required to take the tracks home for analysis and practice editing/mixing. By the end of the two months, the participant will have in his/her hands one or two tracks fully produced. This professional workshop can be taken as many times as the student wants, as music production is an art form that requires practice and patience.
