PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING
Hello, my name is Kelly Lefaive and I am a violin teacher. I have been teaching music to students of various ages for 8 years now. As a recently graduated University music student, I feel like I have a good idea about what makes a good music teacher, because I have spent the last four years taking music classes and lessons.
First and foremost, inspiring a love of music in the student is very important. Engaging the student and making them feel excited about the music they are learning motivates the student to practice and improve. In my opinion, every student is different, and a good teacher is able to tailor lessons to the student’s individual needs. This means getting a good sense of the students’ learning process as well their strengths and weaknesses. The student must feel comfortable in their learning environment and comfortable with the teacher, so that they feel like they can ask questions, try new and challenging things and be creative. Consistency is also a very important part of the learning process. Working with the same teacher on a regular (ideally weekly) basis, creates a sense of trust between the student and teacher.
Musically speaking, I believe it is important for the teacher to emphasize various fundamentals to ensure the student is learning and improving. Technique, reading, theory, rhythmic development and ear training are all part of this process. When students reach a more advanced level, I like to incorporate improvising and composing into the lessons. Another important factor is finding the balance between mastering old concepts and learning new material. This balance is important because I want to keep the student interested and challenged with new material. However, this has to be done at a moderated pace so that the student does not get frustrated. Finally, as a professional musician I enjoy playing different styles of music and should the student be interested, I like to introduce him or her to repertoire in various musical genres.
I look forward to meeting you soon. All the best!
