Andrew Mason (Bass/Guitar)

Andrew Mason is a talented and creative multi-instrumentalist and composer (bass and guitar) with broad stylistic interests and a wealth of professional experience.

His training began at Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, where he focused on guitar performance, jazz composition/ arranging, as well as 20th century composition, and graduated with a Diploma in Jazz Studies.

Mason worked in Halifax, N.S. as a freelance guitarist, playing in styles and settings ranging from jazz combo, to big band, to Celtic folk-pop, and held the house jazz gig at Tomasino’s Ristorante for two years. He soon moved to Toronto and returned to school at York University where he studied South Indian classical percussion, Brazilian samba, Afro-Cuban folkloric music, and contemporary improvisation, graduating with a BFA in Music.

Since being in Toronto, Mason has played with a variety of musical ensembles and artists, including singer/songwriters Mark Cassidy and Lesley

Young, Brazilian singers Luanda Jones, and Aline Morales (of Toronto’s Maracatu Nunca Antes), the Afro-beat inspired funk of Ainike, Samba Porrada (Brazilian funk/rock), The Jake Simons Band, Rhythm-Luv-Connection, and Route 66 (Top 40 cover projects), the traditional Brazilian Samba group Batucada Carioca, and with Toronto’s acclaimed percussion ensemb

le Samba Squad. Mason is a prolific and modern composer, writing for his own original projects, Systems Theory, The Common Thread, and Basswood. In the spring of 2007 Andrew received his Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies from York University, where he explored relationships between music and the environment.

Andrew has been teaching both privately and at a variety of private music schools for over 10 years, and is currently working on a number of instruction books for the bass. He has just returned from a three-month contract playing bass for Celebrity Cruise Lines, and is currently living in Toronto.
